These questions and answers will be especially helpful if you are considering starting karate training

Q. I’m too old or unfit to start training

A. We start training with a gentle warm up and increase intensity gradually. The instructor will not ask you to do exercises which you are not capable of, and the more you attend the fitter you will become.

Q. What is it like being a beginner in a class?

A. Beginners are always welcome and the lesson is adjusted to help beginners as a priority. Experienced karateka should never be bored by practising basic techniques.

Q. What should I wear?

A. For the first four lessons you may wear loose fitting clothes (tracksuit). When you decide you really want to join us, you should purchase a “Gi”.

Q. Will I get hurt?

A. As with any physical sport, there can be a certain amount of contact but it is always carefully controlled. Any students who do not respect fellow students will be asked to leave the class. For added protection you may wear a mouthguard and groin or breast protector if you wish.

Q. Can I start straight away?

A. Beginners are always very welcome to start at any time!

Q. What if I have done Karate before?

A. This is not a problem. Call us, let us know your karate background and we will advise you of the most suitable class.

Q. Will it help me in a fight?

A. Karate does not make you invincible. It will give you more confidence if you are faced with a violent situation, but always remember that “discretion is the better part of valour”.

Q. Is karate better than kung fu or kick boxing?

A. It is not possible to say if any one martial art is better than the other. We respect other forms as we would hope other forms respect shotokan karate.

Q. How often are gradings?

A. Gradings are held every three months in March, June, September and December.

Q. How will I know if I'm ready to grade?

A. Your Instructor will let you know when you have achieved the required standard.

Q. Do I have to grade?

A. Gradings are not compulsory.

Q. What if I have any other questions?

A. Call Sensei Simon on 07956 678118.
